On Saturday, 18 December, at the age of seventy, Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa passed away.

For many years now he had been a friend of the community; he returned often for periods of silence, reflection prayer, and always tried to come for the Easter triduum.

His modesty in dealing with others was striking, as well as his great discretion, not a diplomatic aloofness, but a respect of things and persons always greater than they seem. At the same time he was attentive to human relations in all their nuances.

A man of silence, of thoughtful listening, but also of intense words, he lived a hidden and not evident Christianity, and for this reason capable of efficacy and of being spread.

Perhaps a fruit of this was his attitude always full of confidence, in spite of everything, towards reality, his capacity for the long-range view.

He was capable of wonder at little things, sensible towards the inestimable treasure of affections and faithful friendship, which he knew how to cultivate with great tact. And it is in the serene peace of a meeting with long time friends that he passed to the Lord.

Br Enzo was invited to give the homily at his funeral, held in Rome.

In the light of the Lord who comes,

The prior, br Enzo,
and the brothers and sisters of the community
