Quest’anno il Convegno Ecumenico Internazionale di Spiritualità Ortodossa giunge alla 30° edizione. Iniziato in una veste relativamente modesta negli anni ’90, su proposta della prof.ssa Nina Kauchtschischwili (1919-2010), come convegno dedicato alla spiritualità russa all’indomani della caduta del muro di Berlino, articolato agli inizi degli anni 2000 in due sezioni distinte (sezione bizantina e sezione russa) e proseguito in tale forma per sette anni; riunificato quindi in un solo convegno a partire dal 2007, allo scopo di promuovere una partecipazione più larga, con tematiche di comune interesse, e il dialogo tra tutte le anime dell’ortodossia, dopo alcuni anni di interruzione (2019-2021), il convegno è stato nuovamente ripreso nel 2022, riducendo un po’ il numero dei partecipanti, allo scopo di creare un clima di maggiore dialogo e accoglienza. L’idea di base che ci guida in questo nuovo ciclo è quella di approfondire le figure di santità e gli autori spirituali che sono alla base della tradizione ortodossa e che, nel corso dei secoli, sono diventati comune patrimonio di tutto il mondo cristiano, tanto da poter essere giustamente definiti santi e dottori “ecumenici”.

Dopo aver quindi dedicato un convegno a s. Isacco di Ninive o il Siro (nel 2022) e uno ai Detti dei Padri e delle Madri del deserto (nel 2023), abbiamo voluto quest’anno proseguire dedicando la 30° edizione a una delle figure più importanti della storia del cristianesimo, che è anche uno dei principali santi padri della tradizione monastica orientale e occidentale, particolarmente caro anche alla nostra comunità fin dagli inizi: san Basilio il Grande (330-379), vescovo di Cesarea in Cappadocia.

San Basilio si colloca nel mezzo di quel periodo creativo che va da Costantino al concilio di Calcedonia e ha lasciato la sua impronta in molti ambiti della vita cristiana: nella teologia, nella liturgia, nel diritto canonico, nell’insegnamento sociale, nel monachesimo e nella spiritualità la sua influenza è rimasta grande fino ai nostri giorni, non solo nelle Chiese d’Oriente ma anche nell’Occidente cristiano.

Il nostro convegno, «Basilo il Grande, maestro di vita cristiana», dopo aver presentato la poliedrica personalità del santo e il contesto storico-ecclesiale in cui visse e operò, si concentrerà sul suo insegnamento relativo all’ascesi e alla spiritualità cristiane, espresso principalmente nella raccolta nota come Regole o Asceticon. Si tratta di una raccolta di domande e risposte in cui l’autore delinea la sua visione della vita cristiana come “vita gradita a Dio” e “secondo le Scritture”, non solo per le comunità “monastiche” – alle quali primariamente si rivolge, pur senza mai definirle in questi termini – ma anche per ogni cristiano che desidera restare fedele ai comandi e insegnamenti del vangelo.

Nella sezione conclusiva delle sue Regole morali, Basilio sintetizza l’intera concezione della vita cristiana, sigillando con queste parole anche il suo cammino di discepolo del Signore, che nella sua instancabile attività di riformatore della vita monastica in Cappadocia e di vescovo colmo di sollecitudine per tutte le chiese, non cercò altro che l’obbedienza alla Parola del Signore:

« Che cosa è proprio del cristiano? La fede operante mediante l’amore ... Che cosa è proprio del cristiano? Che la sua giustizia sia in tutto superiore a quella degli scribi e dei farisei, secondo la misura della dottrina che è conforme al vangelo del Signore.
« Che cosa è proprio del cristiano? Amarsi gli uni gli altri come anche il Cristo ha amato noi. Che cosa è proprio del cristiano? Vedere sempre il Signore davanti a sé. Che cosa è proprio del cristiano? Vigilare ogni giorno e ogni ora, ed essere pronto nel compiere perfettamente ciò che è gradito a Dio sapendo che all’ora che non pensiamo il Signore viene »

Particolare attenzione sarà data anche alle attività di Basilio in ambito sociale, al suo rapporto con l'autorità politica, alle sue strategie di comunione nel contesto delle relazioni interecclesiali, e alla sua predicazione del vangelo per la vita di ogni giorno, tutti ambiti nei quali il suo insegnamento e modello restano rilevanti per i cristiani di oggi.

Anche quest’anno l’esperimento avviato con frutto nelle due edizioni precedenti di un intero pomeriggio dedicato alla lettura condivisa dei testi verrà riproposto: i partecipanti avranno l’opportunità di leggere, confrontarsi e gustare insieme in piccoli gruppi alcuni testi significativi di san Basilio sotto la guida di alcuni moderatori in diverse lingue (italiano, inglese, francese, greco e russo).

Ci auguriamo che il Convegno, che anche quest’anno vedrà una partecipazione variegata di studiosi, vescovi, monaci e monache da tutto il mondo e da diverse chiese, resti un’intensa occasione di incontro, formazione, scambio e comunione fraterna tra tutti i cristiani.

This year the International Ecumenical Conference on Orthodox Spirituality reaches its 30th edition. Started in a relatively modest capacity in the 1990s, on the proposal of Professor Nina Kauchtschischwili (1919-2010), as a conference dedicated to Russian spirituality in the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall, divided in the early 2000s into two distinct sections ( Byzantine section and Russian section) and continued in this form for seven years; therefore reunited in a single conference starting from 2007, with the aim of promoting broader participation, with topics of common interest, and dialogue between all the souls of Orthodoxy, after a few years of interruption (2019-2021), the conference it was resumed again in 2022, slightly reducing the number of participants in order to create a climate of greater dialogue and welcome. The basic idea that guides us in this new cycle is to delve deeper into the figures of holiness and the spiritual authors who are at the basis of the Orthodox tradition and who over the centuries have become the common heritage of the entire Christian world, so much so that we can be rightly defined as “ecumenical” saints and doctors.

After having dedicated a conference to s. Isaac of Nineveh or the Syrian (in 2022) and one to the Sayings of the Fathers and Mothers of the desert (in 2023), we wanted to continue by dedicating the 30th edition to one of the most important figures in the history of Christianity, who is also one of the main holy fathers of the eastern and western monastic tradition, particularly dear to our community since the beginning: Saint Basil the Great (330-379), bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia.

Saint Basil is placed in the middle of that creative period that goes from Constantine to the Council of Chalcedon and left his mark in many areas of Christian life: in theology, liturgy, canon law, social teaching, monasticism and spirituality its influence has remained great to this day, not only in the Eastern Churches but also in the Christian West.

Our conference, Basil the Great, Teacher of Christian life, after presenting the multifaceted personality of the saint and the historical-ecclesiastical context in which he lived and worked, will focus on his teaching relating to Christian asceticism and spirituality, expressed mainly in collection known as Rules or Asceticon. This is a collection of questions and answers in which the author outlines his vision of Christian life as a "life pleasing to God" and "according to the Scriptures", not only for "monastic" communities - to which he is primarily addressed, without ever defining them in these terms - but also for every Christian who wishes to remain faithful to the commands and teachings of the gospel.
In the final section of his Moral Rules, Basil summarizes in these terms the entire conception of Christian life, sealing with these words also his journey as a disciple of the Lord, who in his tireless and very fruitful activity as founder of monastic life in Cappadocia and as bishop full of concern for all the churches, sought nothing other than obedience to the Word of the Lord:

« What is the mark of a Christian? Faith working by charity ... What is the mark of a Christian? That his justice abound in all things more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, according to the rule of the doctrine which has been handed down in the Lord's Gospel.

« What is the mark of the Christian? That they love one another as Christ has loved us. What is the mark of a Christian? To set the Lord always in his sight. What is the mark of a Christian? To watch daily and hourly and stand prepared in that state of perfection which is pleasing to God, knowing that at what hour he thinks not, the Lord will come »

Particular attention will also be given to Basil's activities in the social sphere, his relationship with political authority, his strategies of communion in the context of inter-ecclesial relations, and his preaching of the gospel for everyday life, all areas in which his teaching and model still remain relevant to Christians today.

This year too, the experiment launched with fruit in the two previous editions of an entire afternoon dedicated to the shared reading of texts will be proposed again: participants will have the opportunity to read, discuss and enjoy together in small panel groups some significant texts of Saint Basil with the guidance of some moderators in different languages (Italian, English, French, Greek and Russian).

We hope that the Conference, which this year too will see a varied participation of scholars, bishops, monks and nuns from all over the world and from different churches, will remain an intense opportunity for meeting, training, exchange and fraternal communion between all Christians
